Structure

The Connecticut State Department of Education requires prospective educators to meet certain academic skills through tests such as the Praxis I tests in reading, writing, and mathematics. However, there exists an alternative path for individuals seeking formal admission into Connecticut's college or university educator preparation programs or those seeking certification within the state. This alternative is the Connecticut Academic Skills Assessment Waiver, detailed in the ED 192 form, which allows individuals to bypass the standard testing requirements if they have achieved certain scores on tests like the SAT, ACT, GRE or PAA. The waiver application process necessitates the submission of this completed form alongside official score reports, which must be sent directly from the testing agencies, as scores provided by the waiver candidates will not be accepted. The waiver is contingent on meeting minimum score requirements set forth by the Connecticut State Department of Education, and this comprehensive form serves not only as an application but also as a guide to understanding the waiver process, including specific instructions on requesting and submitting official test score reports. With detailed sections on personal information, testing requirements, and the necessary steps to obtain and forward official scores from various testing organizations, the ED 192 form is an essential document for educators in Connecticut looking to utilize their existing test scores for certification purposes.

More About Connecticut Ed 192

  1. What is the purpose of the Connecticut Academic Skills Assessment Waiver Application (ED 192)?

The purpose of the Connecticut Academic Skills Assessment Waiver Application (ED 192) is to provide a pathway for individuals who are seeking formal admission to a Connecticut college or university educator preparation program or certification in Connecticut and have met certain academic criteria to be waived from taking and passing the required academic skills tests, known as the Praxis I – PPST in reading, writing, and mathematics.

  2. Who must meet the Academic Skills Requirement?

Individuals seeking formal admission to a Connecticut Department of Education sanctioned educator preparation program or those seeking educator certification in Connecticut are required to meet the academic skills requirement, which typically involves passing all three sections of the Praxis I tests: reading, writing, and mathematics, unless a waiver is granted based on alternative qualifications.

  3. What scores are accepted for the Academic Skills Assessment Waiver?

The waiver may be granted by furnishing official proof of having met one of the prescribed minimum standards with scores from one of the following: SAT, ACT, GRE, PAA, or ESLAT/Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), with specific minimum scores or criteria required for each test.

  4. How can one apply for the Academic Skills Assessment Waiver?

To apply for the waiver, an individual must submit a completed ED 192 form and an official score report from the respective testing agency (SAT, ACT, GRE, or PAA) directly to the Connecticut State Department of Education's Bureau of Educator Standards and Certification. It's important to note that scores sent by waiver candidates directly will not be accepted.

  5. Is it possible to use scores from multiple test dates to qualify for the waiver?

Yes, if you have taken the SAT, ACT, or GRE on more than one occasion, the highest verbal and the highest mathematics scores will be combined to assess your eligibility for the waiver.

  6. How can I send my official test scores to the Connecticut State Department of Education?

Official test scores must be sent directly from the respective testing company (SAT, ACT, GRE, or PAA) to the Connecticut State Department of Education. Each testing service has specific procedures and forms for requests, including designated program codes or addresses. Past test takers can request score reports via the testing agencies' websites or customer service numbers provided in the ED 192 instructions.

  7. What should I do if the testing agency no longer has my test scores on file?

In situations where the testing agency no longer retains your test scores, you will be permitted to submit a copy of your original test score report along with your waiver application. This exception accommodates applicants whose scores are dated beyond the typical score retention period of the testing agencies.

  8. Are there any specific criteria for using PAA scores for the waiver?

To use PAA scores for the waiver, candidates must have received a total score equivalent to a Sat score of 1000, with neither the mathematics nor the verbal subtest score below the equivalent of 400 points. Additionally, a minimum score of 510 on the English-as-a-Second-Language Achievement Test (ESLAT) or TOEFL is required for individuals whose primary language is not English.

  9. How are PAA scores converted to SAT scores for waiver eligibility?

PAA scores are converted to SAT scores using an abbreviated equivalency table, which aligns PAA verbal and mathematical scores to their approximate SAT counterparts. This conversion is essential for determining eligibility for the assessment waiver based on PAA performance.

  10. Where can additional information or assistance regarding the ED 192 form be obtained?

Additional information or assistance regarding the ED 192 form and the waiver application process can be obtained from the Connecticut State Department of Education's Bureau of Educator Standards and Certification by visiting their website or contacting their office directly. The official website provides comprehensive resources, including application directions and contact details for further assistance.

Common mistakes

Filling out the Connecticut Ed 192 form, which pertains to the application for a waiver from the Connecticut Academic Skills Assessment, requires careful attention to detail. However, applicants often make several common mistakes that can delay or hinder the processing of their applications. Understanding and avoiding these mistakes can streamline the application process.

One common mistake is not providing official test scores as required by the Bureau of Educator Standards and Certification. The Ed 192 form clearly states that test score reports sent directly by applicants will not be accepted unless the testing agency no longer has these scores on file. This detail is crucial yet frequently overlooked. Applicants must request that testing agencies send official score reports directly to the Connecticut State Department of Education.

Another frequent error involves the way personal information is filled out. The instruction to print all information in blue ink and in uppercase letters is often ignored. This requirement is not merely a preference but a necessity for the uniformity and legibility of applications. When applicants disregard this instruction, there’s a risk that their applications may not be processed efficiently.

  1. Non-compliance with specific instructions about sending scores directly from testing agencies.
  2. Ignoring the direction to print information in blue ink and uppercase letters.
  3. Incorrectly choosing or failing to specify the test scores used for the waiver request. The form allows for SAT, ACT, GRE, or PAA test scores as bases for the waiver, but applicants sometimes fail to clearly mark their choice, hampering the evaluation process.
  4. Neglecting to complete additional necessary pages, like the request for official PAA score report forwarding, which adds on to the time and complexity of application processing.
  5. Forgetting to include the application requirement of a test score report when the testing agency no longer retains the score, specifically for GRE scores older than five years.
  6. Omitting necessary personal details such as a former last name, which can be essential for verifying identity and matching scores with the applicant.

In addition to these points, it is also vital to provide complete and accurate contact information, including a current email address. This oversight is common and can lead to communication delays between the Bureau of Educator Standards and Certification and the applicant.

Lastly, the requirement to choose a race/ethnicity category, although optional, is often missed. This piece of information, while not mandatory, can help in the compilation of statistical data for educational and bureaucratic purposes.

  • Failure to request that testing agencies send scores directly to the Connecticut State Department of Education.
  • Application information not printed in uppercase letters or blue ink.
  • Ambiguity about the test scores chosen for the waiver request.
  • Incomplete supplemental pages relevant to the score reporting process.
  • Omission of the GRE score report for tests taken more than five years ago.
  • Lack of former last names that might be necessary for identity verification.
  • Neglecting the optional race/ethnicity section.

By addressing these common mistakes before submitting the Connecticut Ed 192 form, applicants can ensure a smoother process and avoid unnecessary delays or complications with their waiver requests.

Documents used along the form

In preparing or submitting the Connecticut Ed 192 form, applicants seeking an academic skills assessment waiver may need to include additional forms and documents for a comprehensive application process. Understanding these documents and their purpose helps ensure a smoother application experience.

  • Official College Transcript: A record from an accredited institution validating the applicant's degree and coursework. It often supports the academic achievement and qualifications of the candidate.
  • SAT/ACT/GRE Score Reports: These standardized test reports provide the scores necessary for waiving the Praxis I tests. Official scores must be sent directly from the testing agencies.
  • Prueba de Aptitud Academica (PAA) Score Report: For candidates who have taken the PAA, an official score report equivalent to the necessary SAT scores can be used for a waiver.
  • TOEFL or ESLAT Scores: For non-native English speakers, these scores demonstrate proficiency in English and are sometimes required for the waiver.
  • Teacher Certification Application: A broader application for state teaching certification, of which the Ed 192 form may be a component.
  • Proof of Teaching Experience: Documentation such as letters from past employers or a teaching portfolio that provides evidence of teaching experience, if applicable for waiver consideration.
  • Background Check Authorization: A form granting permission for a criminal background check, a common requirement for teaching positions.
  • Verification of Program Completion: A document from a teacher preparation program confirming the applicant's completion of the program, which might be necessary for certification.
  • Professional References: Letters or forms that provide professional endorsements of the applicant's skills, character, and teaching effectiveness.
  • Payment Form: If there is a fee associated with the waiver or certification application, a form for payment information may also be necessary.

Understanding and preparing these documents in advance can make the application process for a Connecticut academic skills assessment waiver much smoother. It is advisable to check with the Connecticut State Department of Education or the specific program guidelines for the most up-to-date requirements and instructions.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score report is a notable document that resembles the Connecticut Ed 192 form. Both documents are utilized by educational authorities to assess the eligibility of candidates for certain academic or professional paths. The SAT score report showcases an individual's proficiency in critical reading, mathematics, and writing, much like the Ed 192 form uses SAT, ACT, GRE, or PAA scores to waive the Praxis I test requirement for educator certification in Connecticut. While the Ed 192 form specifically pertains to educator certification, the SAT score report has a broader application, including college admissions. Nonetheless, the reliance on standardized test scores to fulfill requirements illustrates a shared methodology between the two documents.

Similarly, the Prueba de Aptitud Academica (PAA) score report shares similarities with the Connecticut Ed 192 form, specifically concerning the waiver of academic skills assessment for educator certification. The PAA, like the SAT, assesses verbal and mathematical skills but is tailored to Spanish-speaking populations. Applicants can submit their PAA scores to the Connecticut State Department of Education as an equivalent to the SAT scores, thus demonstrating their competency in lieu of taking the Praxis I exams. This parallel use of standardized test scores across different languages and regions underscores the universal approach to evaluating academic and professional qualifications. By recognizing the PAA scores, the Ed 192 form illustrates its inclusivity and adaptability to a diverse applicant pool.
